Knit Polo Shirt for Men: How to Style It Right

Knit Polo Shirt for Men: How to Style It Right

A knit polo shirt can work with jeans, chinos and trousers and each one gives you a completely different outfit. I used to think of mine that way too. Something for the weekend when I wanted to look a bit better than I would in a T-shirt.

Then I started wearing one with white jeans and straight fit trousers. It works with all three and you can even wear one under a blazer without looking overdressed.

The fabric is what makes the difference. A knit polo texture has more drape than a regular polo and feels closer to knitwear. Get the fit right and it can cover a lot of situations without needing much thought.

What Is a Knit Polo?

A knit polo is made from knitted yarn rather than the piqué fabric used in many traditional polo shirts. It usually feels softer, has more stretch and drapes closer to the body.

The collar and short button placket are still there, but the body feels more like a lightweight jumper than a standard polo.

You will find Knitted polo in cotton, merino wool, cotton linen blends and other fabrics. The weight and fabric make a big difference in how and when you can wear one.

Knit Polo vs Piqué Polo vs Jersey

They can look similar, but they don’t feel the same when you wear them.

A piqué polo has that familiar textured surface and usually holds its shape well. It is the classic polo shirt for daily wear.

A jersey polo is smoother and softer, with a feel closer to a T-shirt. Best for summer weather.

A knit polo has a softer drape and usually looks a little dressier. That makes it easier to wear with linen trousers, stylish loafers or a blazer.

How a Knit Polo Should Fit

How should a knit polo fit men

A textured knit polo should fit close to the body without pulling or clinging.

This is where I would pay the most attention. A Knitted polo that is too loose can lose its shape quickly, while one that is too tight will cling in places you probably don’t want it to.

Check the shoulders first. The seam should sit close to the edge of your shoulder rather than dropping down your arm.

The sleeves should finish around the middle of your bicep. The body should follow your shape without pulling across the chest or stomach.

Length matters too. If you plan to wear the polo untucked, the hem should sit around your waistband or just below it. If it is much longer, it can look like it is meant to be tucked in.

Try your normal size first, but don’t buy it just because the label says the same size you usually wear. Knit polos can fit very differently from one brand to another.

Fabric and Colour

Cotton is the easiest place to start. It is comfortable and good for everyday wear.

A cotton linen blend makes more sense on hot days because it is lighter. Merino wool works better when it gets cooler and makes the polo look a little smarter.

The colour you choose depends on how often you want to wear it.

Black is easy to wear with jeans and simple shoes. Light blue works well with ecru or darker jeans when you want something lighter. Brown and chocolate shades are good for autumn and evening casual outfits, while rust or burgundy can add more colour without being too bright.

If you are buying your first knit polo, pick a colour that goes with clothes you already have. There is no point buying an unusual colour if you will hardly wear it.

Knit Polo With Jeans

This is probably the easiest place to start.

A light blue knit polo with ecru jeans and white sneakers gives you an easy spring or summer outfit. If you want something darker, a chocolate brown polo with black jeans and suede shoes works well in the evening.

You can also go with a burgundy knit polo and blue jeans when you want a little more colour. Keep the polo untucked and let the outfit stay simple.

The jeans matter as much as the polo. Straight or tapered jeans usually look better here than very loose or heavily baggy denim, especially if the polo has a closer fit.

Knit Polo With Chinos

Chinos make the same polo look a little smarter without making it formal.

A rust coloured knit polo with light chinos is a good option when you want some colour without going too bright. Light blue also works well with brown chinos if you want a simple look.

For a simple combination, try a grey casual knit polo with dark green chinos and suede brown loafers. Leave the polo untucked for a casual look or tuck it in if you want to make the outfit a little smarter.

Knit Polo With Tailored Trousers

This is where I find the knit polo really useful.

A black knit polo with taupe trousers and dark brown loafers feels quite dressy without needing a jacket. Keep the polo tucked in and make sure the trousers have a clean fit.

You could also wear a burgundy knit polo with wide leg trousers and black loafers for an evening out. If you prefer something lighter, a cream polo with brown trousers works well for dinner.

This is a good option for a smart casual event or a workplace where you do not need to wear a proper shirt.

Knit Polo With a Blazer

A short sleeve or full sleeve knit polo looks good under a blazer because it is softer and less formal than a dress shirt.

A beige cable knit polo with a casual blazer and blue jeans is a good option for dinner. White sneakers keep the outfit simple without making it look too casual.

If you want something with more colour, try a dusty pink knit polo with a brown blazer and cream trousers. Keep the rest of the outfit simple so the colour of the polo stands out.

I would choose a blazer that is not too formal. A softer blazer works better with a knit polo than a stiff one. The two pieces should look natural together rather than like you are wearing a suit jacket with a polo.

Knit Polo With Shorts

A fine knit polo does not have to be a smart outfit.

In summers, a white knit polo with sage green shorts and clean canvas sneakers is an easy combination. You could also wear a mustard knit polo with colored khaki shorts when you want a little more colour.

Keep the shorts around the knee or slightly above it. Very long or very loose shorts can make the top look too fitted by comparison.

If you want to dress the outfit up a little, swap the sneakers for suede loafers.

Can You Wear a Knit Polo to Work?

Yes, if your workplace allows business casual clothing.

A blue knit polo tucked into formal flat front trousers or chinos is a good starting point. Add loafers or simple leather shoes and, if needed, add blazer.

The workplace matters here. Some offices will be perfectly fine with a knit polo and chinos. Others may still expect a proper shirt.

If you are not sure about the dress code, I would go slightly smarter rather than assuming a knit polo will work everywhere.

Layering a Knit Polo

This is one of the things I like most about knit polos. They are easy to layer without adding much bulk.

Under a blazer, a knit polo gives you a smarter outfit without needing a tie.

An overshirt works for a more casual look. A denim jacket works too, especially with jeans.

When it gets colder, a cardigan or lightweight jacket can go over the top. Just be careful with heavy textures. A chunky cardigan over a thick knit polo can start looking like too much at once.

A thinner knit polo usually works better under a jacket.

Knit Polo for Different Seasons

You can wear a knit polo through more than one season if you choose the right weight.

Spring: Lightweight cotton works well on its own or under a light jacket. This is also a good time for lighter colours such as pale blue, cream or soft green.

Summer: Look for lightweight cotton or a cotton-linen blend. Anything too heavy will feel uncomfortable once the temperature goes up.

Autumn: Merino or cotton-wool blends make more sense as the weather cools. Rust, brown and burgundy also fit nicely here.

Winter: A heavier merino or wool-blend knit polo can work under a jacket or coat. Once it gets properly cold, though, I would usually reach for a jumper instead.

How to Care for a Knit Polo

Knit fabric needs a little more care than a basic cotton T-shirt.

Check the care label first and follow its instructions. Cold or cool water is generally easier on knitwear than a hot wash.

Don’t pull or stretch the polo while it is wet. Reshape it gently and let it dry according to the care instructions.

Avoid the tumble dryer unless the label says it is safe. Heat and tumbling can cause some knit fabrics to shrink or lose their shape.

If you want the polo to last, how you wash and dry it matters almost as much as the quality of the fabric.

What to Remember

A knit polo does not need complicated styling.

Start with the fit, then choose a colour you will wear. Black, brown, light blue and other muted colours can all work depending on the rest of your wardrobe.

From there, jeans keep it casual, chinos make it smarter and fit trousers or a blazer take it further.

That is why I like knit polos. The same shirt can work with jeans and sneakers on the weekend, then with trousers and loafers when you need to look a little smarter. You get more out of it without making getting dressed complicated.
